Endless tutor
My kids have always needed help with homework, due to being a) kids and b) neurospicy in various ways. And I always did what needed to be done. Around the time my son entered high school, he got a serious tickborne illness (not lyme) that made him sicker and sicker. I had to navigate the school system's rules for absences, help him get caught up on homework after sick days, get him a (fairly worthless) 504 disability plan, etc. It got to be, if not a full time job, at least a part-time job.
His third yr of hs we had to homeschool, because his immune system was toast. We finally got a specialist to treat him who knew what she was doing (and boy was THAT a long and frustrating process), but he was VERY sick by that point, and the treatment stage took forever. Homeschooling had its good points, but his illness took a big toll on the family. On him - and me.
After that came two deeply frustrating years at the local community college (plus COVID hit), and both kids needed substantial help navigating the online schooling. At one point I was up to 25 hours per week JUST on helping them get through their classes. On top of the farming and eldercare for my increasingly frail father. I have to emphasize, here, that at no point were the kids being lazy, they truly needed the extra help and learning support. They had some classes where the teachers were good and they learned without tutoring.
I read aloud. Discussed history and literature. Relearned math and chemistry concepts so I could tutor them. It has been. a LOT.
Anyhow. This morning I have been sitting trying to figure out my daughter's (college) precalculus assignment so I can re-teach the concepts to her. The teacher is a) angry and b) heavily accented and hard to understand. And I am so. goddamned tired. of taking up the slack for poor teachers. and an educational system that seems broken beyond salvaging.

wait omg all of you are so so nice! im on the verge of ugly crying from this. my school only requires up to college algebra and im good at algebra so i will be aiming to take that next semester. i took precalculus last year and genuinely cried every day when i did homework so i know if i can avoid it, i am. i also used a lot of photomath and felt like i was learning to a test rather than understanding the material so i know i would have to retake that class from hell if i did end up becoming a doctor. my school has a really good nursing program that can get me to multiple places and my credits will transfer easy. plus, i live in minnesota (horrible ik) and according to some of the nurses ive spoken to, we are in dire need of them. plus i have many nurses close to my stepmother so i have help. genuinely love tumblr for this love im feeling and receiving đ¤đ¤
-đŚ
im so sorry u hate math ): i was a math nerd tbh to the point that when i took precal, my avg was like 103 the entire year. i will say, you should look into different methods of solving problems, thereâs not always one way to the solution and it could just be the method theyâre using. thereâs tons of good youtube channels you can find that will show different ways of solving equations and problems and you can prob find some ways that work for you!! also maybe look into tutoring or ask some friends or family for help if you know any math whizzes, maybe one of the nurses your stepmother knows could help or give some advice on materials that could help.

Navigating AP Precalculus Tutor: Common Student Challenges and Solutions | Tutoring Maphy
Navigating AP Precalculus: Overcoming Common Student Hurdles with Expert Guidance
Introduction:
Embarking on the journey through AP Precalculus can be both exhilarating and daunting for students. As they delve into advanced mathematical concepts, they often encounter various challenges that can hinder their progress. However, with the guidance of a skilled AP Precalculus tutor, these obstacles can be overcome effectively. In this article, we'll explore some of the common difficulties faced by students in AP Precalculus and how working with an experienced AP Precalculus tutor or online calculus tutor can lead to academic success.
Understanding Complex Concepts:
One of the primary challenges students encounter in AP Precalculus is grasping complex mathematical concepts. From trigonometric functions to conic sections, the course material can seem overwhelming at first glance. However, with the assistance of a knowledgeable AP Precalculus tutor, students can break down these concepts into more manageable chunks. Tutors can provide personalized explanations, offer real-world applications, and present alternative problem-solving strategies to enhance understanding.
Mastering Problem-Solving Techniques:
Another obstacle students face is mastering problem-solving techniques. AP Precalculus often requires students to apply various methods and formulas to solve equations, graph functions, and analyze data. Without proper guidance, students may struggle to identify the most effective approach for different types of problems. An AP Precalculus tutor can offer valuable insight into problem-solving strategies, providing step-by-step guidance and practice exercises to reinforce learning.
Overcoming Test Anxiety:
Test anxiety is a common issue that can significantly impact student performance in AP Precalculus. The pressure of exams, quizzes, and assessments can lead to stress and apprehension, causing students to underperform even if they understand the material. Working with an AP Precalculus tutor can help alleviate test anxiety by instilling confidence and providing targeted preparation techniques. Tutors can administer practice tests, offer constructive feedback, and teach stress-reduction strategies to help students perform at their best on exams.
Managing Time Effectively:
Time management is crucial for success in AP Precalculus, as students must balance coursework, homework assignments, and exam preparation alongside their other academic and extracurricular commitments. However, many students struggle to prioritize tasks and allocate sufficient time to study effectively. An AP Precalculus tutor can assist students in developing effective time management skills, creating study schedules, and setting realistic goals to stay on track throughout the course.
Utilizing Online Resources:
In today's digital age, online resources play a vital role in supplementing traditional classroom learning. However, navigating the vast array of online resources available for AP Precalculus can be overwhelming for students. An online calculus tutor can help students identify reputable websites, instructional videos, and interactive tools tailored to their individual learning needs. Additionally, online tutors can leverage virtual whiteboards, screen-sharing capabilities, and other digital tools to facilitate remote learning sessions and enhance student engagement.
Conclusion:
Navigating AP Precalculus can be challenging, but with the support of an experienced AP Precalculus tutor or online calculus tutor, students can overcome obstacles and achieve academic success. From understanding complex concepts to mastering problem-solving techniques and managing time effectively, tutors play a crucial role in guiding students through their AP Precalculus journey. I have always been naturally gifted at maths. When in elementary school certain family circumstances prevented me from actually attending math class and everything that came after it on a daily basis, this resulted in me scoring a 79.5% on a placement exam for middle school math classes. I still remember being frustrated but being able to figure out the answers well enough. Almost well enough. I needed an 80% to be put into the class where I belonged. (Did I really belong there? We'll never know.)
As dominoes fall, I was not challenged enough in middle school maths, found tedious the busywork designed to ingrain math I already knew, and stopped torturing myself with it. This was the start to a disillusionment with all homework, but that's another story. I was moved from regular maths into remedial maths, which was worse. I still remember trying to teach myself from my old friends' textbooks, as they were doing fun things like trigonometry and precalculus, while the other boys at my table were preoccupied by exchanging masturbation tips. (No pun intended.)
When a meeting was called to asses why I was doing so terribly on paper in maths but testing excellently, I presented the fact that I, without help, had discovered that there is a pattern to finding the next square in a sequence. (It's that (x+1)^2=x^2+2x+1.) No one taught me this. I had been moved out of algebra.
Similar misunderstandings and treatment continued to dog me throughout high school. When I discovered the trick to finding the next cube in a series, I had just graduated. But something about it bugged me. Surely there must be a way to predict the formulae for discovering the next Nth power in a series. Spoiler alert, there is! I was a second semester college freshman taking Calculus 131 with a professor who wasn't actually a teacher by any stretch when I figured out that I was right, and I rediscovered Pascal's triangle.
Pascal's triangle is an organization of figures for which each row is the coefficients for the equations I had been pondering like an orb for a decade. It's free. You can look it up, they're there, they have many other uses. I independently brute-forced Pascal's Triangle. In another place and time I would be a genius. Instead, I realized at seventeen (before voting age!) that I had been failed by the system all those years ago in the sixth grade, when my math teacher could have just said "check out this triangle" and brought me up to speed with the rest of the learned 21st century world.
Now, are my teachers to blame for this? No. Not really. Overworked, understaffed, underpaid, they were not to blame for not having the foresight to predict exactly what information could have saved me. Hindsight, only hindsight, is 20/20. Am I to blame for not having the language as a child to express what I meant, or to correctly ask what I needed to know? Again, no. I was victimized by the system. Thousands, millions worldwide like me are managed rather than encouraged because it reflects well on the school, the state, the country.
It leads to questions like "Where would we be as a populace if we were somehow able to efficiently reach every child with what they need to excel?" and "In what other areas are we failing our children with incomplete education?" I don't have these answers. "Where would I be if I had gotten what I needed?" I don't have the answer to that, either. I still teach myself calculus between work, sleep, and chores.
I suppose I'm only telling this story because you asked, OP. The most screwed up thing isn't that it happened to me, but that it keeps happening, everywhere. Still.
I'll close with just a little something to think about:
"I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." - Stephen Jay Gould, The Panda's Thumb: More Reflections in Natural History
Everyone give me the most screwed up thing that has ever happened to you in the american public school system

dealerâs choice + 30
for you hen :) trebek siblings (for clarity's sake: here david trebek (they/them) is 15 and andrew is 32, and is an aspiring blaseball player but won't tell andrew that)
30. laying their head on the other's shoulder
David doesn't look up when Andrew lets himself into the apartment, focused on their precalculus homework.
"I swear to Saint Michelle, David," Andrew says, "if you ate the rest of my empanadas I'm going to throw you out the window." A beat, and then: "If you're going to have a glass on my coffee table, put it on a coaster, fuck."
David doesn't bother. Andrew swoops by and slides the coaster under David's water glass, because he fusses like nobody's business. David's older brother is in his post-practice gearâsweaty Under Armour and clean sweatsâand he ruffles their hair as he passes. He reeks of sweat and mud, and David wrinkles their nose.
"Hi Andrew," David says belatedly, stretching out their legs under the table. Their left foot is asleep from being trapped under their right thigh. "May Saint Michelle grant you the inner serenity to not commit violence against your little sibling. Also, the wisdom to take a shower."
"Fuck off. This is my apartment, you know," Andrew says. The fridge swings open; David notes the pop-hiss of a beer bottle opening, and the clatter as the fridge shuts again.
"You were the one who gave me a key." David answers the fourth problem in the set, grimaces at their own handwriting, and erases it so they can write it again. "How was practice?"
Andrew makes a noncommittal noise, evasive the same way he's been in the two years since Leon Duncan retired, but he never drinks after practice unless he's annoyed. The beer bottle gets set on the counter; Andrew's never treated David with kid gloves the way Mom and Dad do sometimes, like they're not entirely sure what to do with them because they're not Andrew.
Andrew says, "You look tired."
"Mom and Dad had friends over last night and I couldn't sleep," David says. Wine nights were always like that.
"Huh," Andrew says, and wanders into his bedroom, shutting the door behind him. David glances up briefly, and then gets back to work when they hear the shower turn on.
In the time it takes for Andrew to shower, David's finished three more problems and is struggling with a fourth.
"You know you could have called me, right?" Andrew says, short hair sticking up in wet spikes from his forehead when he emerges from his bedroom again. He grabs his beer off the counter. "If I thought it'd help I'd tell Mom and Dad to knock it off, but they stopped listening to me as soon as I moved out."
If David had wanted to call Andrew, they would have called Andrew, and they both know it.
"I appreciate the effort," David grumbles sarcastically, but scoots over obligingly when Andrew lowers himself to the ground to sit next to them at the coffee table, setting his beer on another coaster. They yawn hugely. "Can you help me with math?"
"Kid," Andrew says, "it has been fifteen years since I've done precalc."
"Bleh," David says.
"Sorry," Andrew says, the apology automatic but not (David thinks) insincere, and reaches for one of David's pencil and a blank sheet of paper, tilting the printed problem set toward him so he can read it. "I'll give it a shot, okay?"
"Okay," David mumbles. "I'm gonna take a nap."
"You do that," Andrew murmurs, pencil already scratching on the paper, and the bulwark of David's older brother doesn't give way in the slightest as David slumps over onto Andrew's shoulder.
#andrew trebek#david trebek#my writing#look we were discussing them and i simply had to. i simply did

Worth the Wait- All Time Low Fanfiction
Jack sneaks out of school to take care of his long time crush, Alex. High School AU. Word Count: 4733
More notes at the end.Â
âJack, have you seen Alex? He usually gets here before you do, right?â Zack asked Jack as he took a seat on the bench in the quad they always occupied before school officially started for the day.
âI havenât seen him, his car wasnât in the lot, either. I hope heâs okay,â Jack replied, his sudden concern making Rian laugh.
âDude, when are you going to man up and tell Alex that you like him? Youâve had a monster crush on him for, what, over a year now, right?â Rian asked, making Jack shove him as he held a finger in front of his mouth with wide eyes.
âWill you keep it down? We donât need to let the whole school know about that, itâll increase the likelihood of it getting back to Alex!â Jack exclaimed, a serious look on his face.
âI mean, wouldnât that kind of be a good thing? Like, youâre clearly too scared to make the first move, maybe he should hear it through the grapevine and do something first,â Zack pointed out, making Jack roll his eyes.
âZackâs got a point, dude. Youâve been carrying around this secret crush for the longest time now, you really should say something so you donât have to keep torturing yourself about it,â Rian added.
âNo, I donât want to ruin our friendship if he doesnât feel the same way,â Jack sternly stated.
âWell, heâs bi, and heâs always all over you, so I think him liking you back is a reasonable assumption,â Rian continued.
âItâs not worth the risk,â Jack said back.
âSo, is it worth torturing yourself, then?â Rian countered.
âWhy are we even talking about this? How did you guys ganging up on me even become a thing?â
âWeâre not trying to gang up on you, weâre trying to help you, dude. Also, since he isnât here, now is a great time to talk about Alex and that huge crush you have on him,â Zack smugly replied.
âYou motherf-â Jack started, before getting cut off by the five minute warning bell.
âDamn, I had a few more one-liners planned! Oh well, theyâll have to wait until lunch, assuming Alex doesnât show up,â Rian said, laughing as Jack rolled his eyes yet again.
âFuck you guys, Iâll see you in a few hours,â Jack said, standing up and putting his backpack on.
âSounds good, lover boy,â Zack said, laughing with Rian as they walked off to their first shared class.
Jack went in the opposite direction to get to the precalculus class that he normally had with Alex. He really hoped that Alex would show up right on time, having to suffer through it alone was torture; Alex really did make everything better.
When he got to the classroom, most of the other students were already in their seats, talking about the previous nightâs homework. Jack took his seat, noticing that Alexâs next to him was empty. After waiting a couple more minutes, Jack decided to text his friend and see what was going on.
Jack: Hey dude, you coming to school today?
Jack stared at his screen, waiting for a reply. Not much later, the teacher walked in and started class, so Jack put his phone at the top right corner of his desk, and pulled out his notebook. The lesson was on trigonometry, but Jack couldnât have cared less about the different formulas, his mind was stuck on Alex. He of course wondered why Alex wasnât in class, but he also thought about what Rian and Zack had said in the quad earlier.
Heâd known Alex for four years now, but for the past year, heâd been head over heels in love with him. Jack wasnât sure how his crush developed, but every time he was around Alex, he just felt happier and safe; no other friend had ever made him feel like this before. He had wanted to tell Alex about how he felt, but the possibility of ruining their friendship scared Jack, if Alex didnât feel the same way and learned that Jack had a massive crush on him, would it scare him off? Would everything between the two of them become awkward and changed forever? Jack didnât know, but these questions were enough to scare him into saying nothing and pretending his crush didnât exist.
He hadnât told Rian and Zack about his feelings, theyâd figured it out on their own, and Jack had made them promise that theyâd never tell Alex, which they agreed to, knowing that if Alex ever did find out, it should be from Jack. His thoughts shifted from his crush on Alex to wondering about where Alex was, he hoped that Alex was okay, wherever he was, and he hoped that heâd get a text back soon.
About halfway through first period, Jackâs phone vibrated, and he did his best to discreetly grab it and look at it without his teacher noticing.
Alex: No, Iâm like really sick :/
Jack instantly felt bad, he knew that whenever Alex was under the weather, it was never something simple, it was always miserable.
Jack: Sorry to hear that man :( are you okay?
Alex: Not really, I donât think Iâve ever been this sick. My parents are still out of town too which sucks
Jack: Maybe I can sneak out of here at lunch and come hang with you
Alex: You donât have to commit truancy for me lol, plus Iâm disgusting and look awful rn, idk if youâd really want to be around me
Jack: I bet you still look great, you motherfucker. Get some rest for now and Iâll text closer to lunch
Alex: Youâre too good to me, JB
Jack smiled as he turned his phone off and put it back on the corner of his desk. He knew he was definitely going to be sneaking out at lunch, and he decided that heâd stop at the store on his way to Alexâs to get a few things that would hopefully cheer him up some.
If he could have everything his way, heâd get up and walk out of the school building right now, but he was pretty confident that his math teacher wouldnât take too kindly to him doing that. For the remainder of first period, Jack genuinely tried his hardest to pay attention to the lesson, but he couldnât get his mind off Alex; he was concerned that he was seemingly so sick and all alone, but he knew that obsessing over this wouldnât make lunch time arrive any faster.
Eventually, first period finally ended and second began, leading to third and fourth, too. Throughout all of his classes, Jackâs mind wandered back to Alex, even though he was probably miserable, Jack was still beyond excited to spend the day with him. He really enjoyed doing things for others, and he thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to do just that for Alex.
The only concern he had was that Alexâs vulnerability from being sick might rub off on him and make him feel vulnerable enough to confess his feelings. Maybe Rian and Zack were right, maybe he should just tell Alex how he felt, there was theoretically a chance that Alex felt the same way. As much as Jack wanted to arrive at Alexâs and confess everything so they could spend the rest of the day snuggled up, he knew he shouldnât do that. Of course, he wasnât saying he wouldnât confess his feelings, but he had to be careful and only do so if it felt right.
After three long hours, it was finally lunch time, and Jack figured that he should head over to their usual lunch table to let Rian and Zack know what he was doing before sneaking out. When he got to the table, Rian and Zack were already there, talking about their upcoming physics exam. Jack figured he had some sort of distressed look on his face, because the two of them immediately stopped talking and looked concerned once they saw Jack.
âGuys, Iâm going to do something that I might need your help covering for,â Jack said, taking a seat across from his friends.
â¨
âYouâre going over to Alexâs, arenât you?â Zack asked, laughing some.
âHow did you know?â Jack questioned, a tone of genuine surprise in his voice.
âJack, what else would you be so passionate about after four classes? Surely it isnât your homework or upcoming exams,â Rian continued, making Jack roll his eyes.
âOkay, yes, youâre right, Iâm going over to Alexâs. He texted with me some during first period, apparently heâs, like, super sick and his parents are out of town, so I want to help if I can,â Jack explained.
âWell, are you finally going to confess your feelings? Obviously youâre trying to do a nice thing, but weâre dudes, we donât, like, take care of each other like that,â Zack pointed out, laughing some.
âI mean, I want to, I want to walk in and confess how I feel so we can spend the rest of the day cuddled up on the couch or his bed or whatever, but Iâm still scared to. Also, I donât want to make him uncomfortable since heâs already not feeling great,â Jack stated, as Rian and Zack nodded along.
âI guess you have a point, man. Personally, I think if thereâs a moment that feels right, you should just do it. Like, it could really make his day, you never know. Plus, I think he likes you back, youâve seen how he looks at you, right?â Rian said, taking a bite of his lunch.
âDonât go putting ideas in my head, if that isnât true, Iâm going to be disappointed and mad at you, dude,â Jack warned, trying to sound serious.
âI agree with Rian, I think he likes you, too. You guys just have this, like, vibe, that Iâve only seen in people who like each other. Just go through with your plan, go to his place and spend some time with him, Iâm sure heâll appreciate the company regardless,â Zack assured, making a small smile appear on Jackâs face.
âThanks, I appreciate your allâs advice; thatâs what it was supposed to be, right?â Jack joked, laughing some.
âWell, some advice and some jokes, that might be more accurate. Hey, thereâs only ten minutes left of lunch, if you want to get out of here, youâd better go,â Zack pointed out, looking at the time on his phone.
âShit, youâre right, I didnât realize it had gotten so late. Well, I guess if anything changes, like our relationship status, Iâll let you know,â Jack said, getting up and grabbing his car keys out of his pocket.
âSounds good, just try to have a good time, dude. Regardless of what happens with the relationship shit, heâll appreciate that youâre spending time with him,â Rian assured, catching Jack off guard.
âWoah, Rian being supportive and not being a sarcastic asshole? Are you feeling sick, too?â Jack questioned, earning a laugh from Zack and an eye roll from Rian.
âYes, itâs support, now go before I start cracking jokes and making you feel more nervous,â Rian said in a mock-stern tone.
Jack smiled at his friends one last time before sneaking over to the back door of the cafeteria, the one that conveniently led to the student parking lot. After assuring that no staff were able to see him, Jack opened the door, then quickly bolted out and in the direction of his car. Luckily, no one had noticed him leave, and he breathed a sigh of relief when he got in his car and shut the door.
Jack quickly started up his car then drove off campus, in the direction of the nearby Target, he hoped that it would have everything heâd need for Alex. As he drove, he listened to his favorite songs and continued thinking about Alex, and what Zack and Rian had been telling him at lunch. The more he thought about it, the more Jack wanted to confess his feelings today, he knew it was risky, but he also knew that if Alex felt the same way, it would be so worth it.
His Target trip was quick, heâd grabbed Alex a bouquet of flowers to spruce up his room, a couple cans of his favorite soup, and a cute teddy bear that he thought Alex would get a kick out of. Once he had everything, he drove in the direction of Alexâs house, which luckily wasnât too far away from where the Target was. He felt his nerves start to kick in more, and tried taking a deep breath to alleviate them to an extent. As he drove, Jack tried to eliminate any type of expectations he had for how this afternoon would go, he knew that would likely just result in him feeling hurt or disappointed. He just had to remember his primary goal, make sure Alex was okay, and do whatever he could to help him feel better.
Eventually, Jack got to Alexâs driveway and parked behind his car. He grabbed the things heâd gotten at Target, then made his way to the front door. Jack realized heâd never told Alex he was here, or even on the way, and the thought of making Alex get up from wherever he was made him feel bad. Deciding to try his luck before calling Alex, Jack twisted the knob of the door, and was very surprised to find it unlocked. He realized that Alex had probably gotten up and unlocked it when Jack had originally texted saying heâd come over, then he wouldnât have to get up again later.
Jack stepped inside and went into the kitchen, he set the soup cans on the counter, then found a vase under the sink, and placed the flowers in it. After a couple deep breaths, Jack made his way upstairs and over to where Alexâs bedroom was. He could hear loud coughs coming from the other side, making him feel even more sympathy for his friend.
Once the coughing stopped, Jack lightly knocked on the door before walking into Alexâs room.
âHey, howâre you doing, Alex?â Jack asked, making his way over to Alexâs bed.
The majority of the room wasnât too messy, but the bed and Alexâs bedside table looked awful. There were used tissues everywhere, a pot from the kitchen that Jack figured Alex had brought up for an emergency, and different cups and medicine bottles everywhere. Alex was wrapped up in about three blankets and still shivering as he watched something on his TV.
âOh, hey, Jack. I feel really awful, to be honest,â Alex replied, his voice raspy and congested.
âIâm sorry to hear that, you look pretty miserable. I got you some stuff thatâll hopefully make you feel better, though! There are two cans of your favorite soup in the kitchen, and I grabbed some flowers to brighten up your room! Oh, I also got you this,â Jack replied, setting the flowers down before reaching into the plastic bag to get out the teddy bear.
âThis is cute! Thanks, Jack, this means a lot, I-â
Alex cut himself off by starting to cough again, forcing himself to sit up as he put his elbow to his mouth. Jack quickly took a seat on the bed next to Alex and rubbed his back as he coughed. Having his hand on Alexâs back made him realize how warm Alex felt, and he knew that having all of these blankets on him would be bad news in the long run, it would just make Alexâs fever worse.
Eventually, Alex finally calmed himself down and Jack helped ease him back into the spot heâd been laying in.
âSorry, I didnât realize that was coming until it hit me,â
âNo need to apologize, itâs okay. Hey, youâre going to hate me for this, but I think you need to ditch at least one of these three blankets,â
âWhat? No way, Iâm already freezing as it is!â
âAlex, youâre freezing because you have a fever; if you lower that fever some, your chills will go away. At the very least, theyâll be a lot more tolerable. Come on, letâs take the top one off for a bit and see if it does any good. Also, Iâm taking your temperature,â Jack insisted, pulling a blanket off of a very resistant Alex.
âYou sound like a mom,â Alex muttered, coughing some.
âWell, Iâd rather be like a mom and help you than ignore it and have you get worse. Trust me, youâll thank me later,â
Jack put the blanket on Alexâs desk chair so he wouldnât grab it again, then walked into the bathroom to grab the thermometer from the medicine cabinet. When he got back to Alexâs room, Alex was blowing his nose.
âOkay, letâs see what this says. Have you taken your temperature at all since you got sick?â
Alex just shook his head as Jack stuck the thermometer under his mouth and shivered violently. Jack felt bad, he really didnât want to take the blanket from his friend and make him feel more miserable, but Jack knew that heâd done the right thing. After a few seconds, the thermometer finally beeped, and Alex handed it to Jack, too out of it to read the number.
â101.7, damn, thatâs kind of high, Alex. Iâm glad we took that blanket off of you,â Jack said, setting the thermometer down as he sat on the side of the bed again.
âJack, Iâm fucking freezing,â Alex said with a sneeze.
âI know, but I promise when your fever goes down, youâll start to feel better. Actually, I have an idea to lower it faster, one second!â
Jack quickly stood up then went back into the bathroom and grabbed a washcloth from the linen closet. He ran it under some cold water, rung out the excess water, then brought it back to Alexâs room.
âWhatâs that?â Alex asked, starting to tightly hug himself some to combat his chills.
âPut this on your forehead, I think itâll get that fever lowered,â
Jack folded it some then went to place it on Alexâs head, only for him to flinch and cover his forehead with his hands.
âThat thing is fucking cold, no way itâs going on my forehead,â Alex stated, doing his best to keep his hands on his forehead as Jack pulled on them.
âAlex, will you please just try it? Youâll feel so much better, I promise,â
âOn one condition,â
âWhat would that be?â Jack asked, rolling his eyes.
âYou have to lay here with me so I can take advantage of your body heat,â
âOkay fine, whatever it takes for you to stop being so stubborn,â
Jack finally placed the cloth on Alexâs forehead, making Alex shiver even more. After taking off his shoes, he laid down next to Alex and wrapped him into a hug.
âThis is better,â Alex said, looking up at Jack.
Jack couldnât believe it, Alex was insanely sick but somehow still managed to look perfect to him.
âHey, are you good?â Alex eventually asked, pulling Jack from his thoughts.
âOh yeah, um, I am, why do you ask?â Jack continued, hoping Alex wouldnât think much of what had just happened.
âI mean, you were straight up staring at me for, like, a minute. Iâm sick, not stupid, so I know that was kind of weird, even for you,â
âOh, I guess I just zoned out, sorry,â
âAre you okay, dude?â
âIâm fine, but donât worry about me, youâre the one whoâs dying right now,â
âI mean, true, but I can tell somethingâs up, Jack. Actually, Iâve kind of been able to tell that for a while now,â Alex continued, sounding nervous but determined to make his point.
âWhat do you mean?â Jack asked, trying to play dumb.
âWhat do you mean what do I mean? Like, Iâve caught you staring at me multiple times lately, you seem a lot more invested in what I have to say, you brought me a whole care package just now. Thatâs more than just a friend would do, yâknow?â
âWell, whatâre you trying to say, Alex?â
âJack, do you, um, see me as more than a friend?â
Jackâs heart immediately started beating ten times faster, and he felt his palms get sweaty. Alex was right, of course, but Jack had thought heâd done a great job at hiding how he felt from Alex, but apparently he hadnât. As Jack searched for what to say next, he couldnât help but wonder if Alex had figured out his secret because heâd been looking for it.
âBefore I answer that, I have a question for you,â Jack replied, doing his best to keep his tone even.
âWhat? I already asked you something, you have to answer first, thatâs how this works!â Alex exclaimed, coughing some.
âNot this time! Alex, are you asking me what youâre asking, because thatâs what youâve been looking for? Like, looking for clues about what you just asked?â
âJack, Iâm not answering until you do. Iâll sit here all day and wait, itâs not like I can do much else anyway,â
Despite how sick he was, Alex had a look of determination on his face, and Jack couldnât deny it anymore. Heâd promised himself, along with Zack and Rian, that if the opportunity to finally reveal his feelings to Alex presented itself, that heâd confess how he felt; maybe it was finally time to take a leap of faith.
âOkay, um, this is a bit nerve wracking for me, so be patient. Alex, yes, I do see you as more than a friend, and I have for a while now,â Jack finally replied, doing his best to take deep breaths and stay calm.
âCan you, like, give me more detail than that?â Alex asked, laughing some as he scooted closer to Jack.
âSure, um, where do I start? Alex, I like you, like, I like-like you, and I have for about a year now. I donât even know what made these feelings develop, like, weâve been friends for four years, but sometime last year, a switch just flipped in me, and I woke up and realized that I was in love with you,â Jack confessed, feeling like a fifty pound weight had just been removed from his chest.
âYouâve liked me for that long, and this is just the first Iâm hearing of it?â
âYeah, but not because I wanted to keep it from you. Like, keeping this secret has been so fucking hard, like Iâll see you get lost in a song, or be super passionate about what youâre talking about, and itâs things like that that made me fall for you. I love literally everything about you, but I kept it to myself, because I didnât want to ruin our friendship. Like, if you didnât feel the same, I didnât want shit to be awkward between us; youâre my best friend, I canât just, like, lose you, yâknow? I just didnât want to put you in an uncomfortable position, but yeah, Iâve been head over heels for you for a long time now. Hey, you didnât answer my question, were you looking for signs that I liked you?â
âJack, Iâm speechless, but in a good way, I promise. I guess you could say that Iâve been kind of hopeful that youâve had these kinds of feelings, too. I like you too, Jack, like, I like-like you, and have for a decent amount of time now. I didnât tell you for the same reasons, I didnât want things to be weird if you didnât feel the same way, I didnât want to lose our friendship over weird feelings. This is so great, though, we both like each other like this! Where do we go from here?â Alex asked, before bursting into a coughing fit.
Jack quickly helped Alex sit up some in his bed, then rubbed his back until he finally calmed himself down. Once Alex could breathe again, Jack handed Alex a glass of water from his nightstand, and Alex took a sip before handing it back to Jack.
âAre you okay, Alex?â Jack gently asked, still rubbing Alexâs back some.
âYeah, Iâm fine. I mean, that hurt like a bitch, but Iâll live. Back to my question, though; where do we go from here?â Alex continued, looking up at Jack with a small smile.
âI think thereâs only one logical thing I can ask now. Alex, do you want to be my boyfriend?â
Even though he knew they both felt the same way, Jack was still nervous to officially ask Alex out. He had all of the assurance in the world from the conversation heâd just shared with Alex, but a year of anxiety and fear of someone finding out his secret would be hard to change.
âYes, Jack, Iâd love to be your boyfriend,â
The two of them looked at each other, huge smiles on both of their faces. Jack wrapped Alex into a tight hug, rubbing his back with one hand and stroking his hair with the other as the huge smile stayed on his face. Alex was still insanely sweaty, but Jack didnât care, nothing would ruin this moment for the two of them.
After a few minutes, Alex pulled back to sneeze, but then looked up at Jack again, a huge smile still plastered on his face.
âI canât believe we just became a thing while I look disgusting and feel miserable,â Alex said in a tone that Jack recognized as partly sarcastic with a hint of truth.
âYou donât look disgusting, babe. Hey, can I call you that now?â Jack asked, making their smiles grow even bigger.
âOf course, you can call me any cute nickname you want, Iâll definitely do the same, baby,â
âThat sounds perfect to me. I meant what I said, though, you donât look disgusting. Youâre knocking on deathâs door but still look absolutely perfect, I donât know how you do it! As far as you feeling miserable, though, what can I do to help?â
âHonestly, you just being here helps so much. Do you think we could lay down, and I could put my head on your chest? I might fall asleep eventually, but I just want to be close to you,â
âAbsolutely, lay however youâre the most comfortable,â
The two of them laid back down in Alexâs bed, and Alex put his head onto Jackâs chest, and Jack wrapped Alex into a hug.
âThis is perfect,â Alex said, Jack could hear the smile on Alexâs face as he spoke.
âIâm so glad to hear that, let me know if thereâs anything else I can do for you. I canât believe this is really happening, Iâve wanted this for so, so long,â Jack breathlessly said, bringing his other hand up to start stroking Alexâs hair again.
âMe either, Jack. When I wake up, you might have to tell me about this, Iâll probably think it was a fever induced delusion,â Alex joked, making them both laugh some.
âIâll tell you as much as you want, Iâll tell everyone all the time that the Alex Gaskarth is my boyfriend,â Jack affectionately replied, placing a kiss on Alexâs forehead.
âYouâre sweet, Jack. When Iâm better, weâre going on a real date to celebrate this,â
âOh, for sure, but for now, you need to focus on resting and getting better. Iâll be here for however long you want me to be to help you, okay?â
âThat sounds great to me. I think Iâm going to sleep for a bit now,â Alex continued, hugging Jack tighter and closing his eyes.
âOkay, babe, Iâll be here if you need me,â Jack replied, continuing to stroke Alexâs hair.
After a few minutes, Alex was fast asleep, lightly snoring due to the congestion in his sinuses. Jack stared out Alexâs bedroom window, the huge smile still plastered on his face. He couldnât believe it, Alex was really his boyfriend now; it almost felt too good to be true. Waiting for so long hadnât been easy, but Jack had no doubt in his mind that this new chapter in both of their lives will have been worth the wait. Â
Hi guys! I posted something similar to this forever ago, but I wrote this semi recently and liked it more than I expected to, so I decided to share it! I can't believe I'm only seven fics away from having 300 posted! It blows my mind that I have so many up, and that after all this time, people still seem to enjoy them! I plan on having a new chapter of LBUA up fairly soon, and another one shot! As always, feel free to send in requests, I'd love to write your all's ideas! -Liv

Help My Mind Shut Up
Help My Mind Shut Up - Carlos x Reader (Read here on ao3.)
1,445 words
Summary: You canât sleep, so you call your boyfriend Carlos for comfort and help.
Additional Tags: gender-ambiguous reader, school stress, phone call, grounding methods, anxiety
As you lay in bed, yawning, you stared at the ceiling of your dorm room. It wasnât smooth in texture; it had small bumps and ridges like a landscape. Your eyes strained in the darkness to trace the lines. Some of them were neat waves. Sine and cosine waves. The sine of theta over cosine of theta equals tangent thetaâ
You had been falling asleep for a minute there, but now you were wide awake again. You rolled over and looked at the time on your phone. You squinted at the bright screen and read 2:15 A.M. How was that possible?
Across the room, your roommate slept soundly. You pouted. It wasnât fair. You wanted to sleep but your mind wouldnât shut up. You would gladly let Queen Rapunzel hit you in the head with her frying pan if it knocked you out. Maybe she could also sit down with you and review the reasons for Coronaâs alliance with Arendelleâaugh! Shut up!
It wasnât time to think about that. It was time to sleep, and it had been for a while. But you couldnât.
You squinted at your phone again. You didnât want to disturb your roommateâs slumber, but maybe you could talk to someone else. Yawning, you opened your contacts and tapped to call your boyfriend.
The phone rang thrice before you heard Carlos de Vilâs groggy, perplexed voice say your name on the other end.
âHey.â You spoke softly so you wouldnât wake your roommate.
âHey.â Carlosâs voice was equally soft, probably so he wouldnât wake up Jay. âWhy are you calling so late? Is something wrong?â
The worry in your boyfriendâs voice brought tears to your eyes. Well, it was a combination of his worry and your stress. Ugh, the stress was enough that pretty much anything couldâve made you cry right then.
âI canât get to sleep,â you said.
Carlos let that sit for a beat before replying. âSomethingâs upsetting you. Do youâyawnâwant to talk about it?â
âUm. I guess I could?â You stayed on the call but returned your eyes to the ceiling. âI canât stop thinking about schoolwork.â
âMm,â Carlos hummed. âAny class in particular?â
âMostly precalculus and history.â
âHistory of Auradon?â
âYeah.â
âDo you still have homework to do?â
âNo, I . . . I mean, I attempted all of it, but Iâm pretty sure I got at least half my precalc homework wrong.â
âI can help you find a tutor in the morning.â
âDo you know someone who could tutor me?â you asked.
âIâll be able to find someone,â Carlos said with a yawn. âRemember, Iâm friends with the king of Auradon, and he knows a lot of people. Iâll find someone to help you.â
âThanks, hon. Thatâs so sweet of you.â
âAnd you said HIstory of Auradon was bugging you, too?â
You sighed. âYeah. Thereâs a unit test at the end of the week and Iâm so not ready.â
âThere are definitely people who can help you with that,â Carlos said. How he managed to sound so confident while also sounding sleepy, you couldnât figure out.
âThank you,â you said.
âAre you still feeling bad?â Carlos asked.
The lines on the ceiling turned into royal family trees. You squeezed your eyes shut to block them out. âGah! Yes!â
âWhat can I do to help?â
âI donât know,â you grumbled. âMy mind wonât shut up.â
âHmm.â Your boyfriend was silent on the other end, but you could hear the gears turning in his head. âWe need to find something for you to focus on so your brain wonât be able to think of schoolwork.â
âWhat do I focus on, though?â
âUm . . . have you tried counting sheep?â
You laughed. âOh, I tried. I canât count normally anymore. I try to count, but my mind goes to pi over six, pi over three, pi over two, two pi over threeââ
âOkay, okay,â Carlos said. âLetâs stay away from numbers. And lines. And curves. And . . . what is the test on Friday about?â
âRoyal alliances,â you said with a groan.
âThen letâs stay away from royalty, too.â
âHard to get away from around here,â you said.
Carlos laughed. âYouâre right about that. On my first day in Auradon, every other person I met was royalty.â
You laughed. âIâd love to go far away, maybe second to the right and straight on till morning, if it meant I never had to look at royal lineages ever again.â
âOh!â Carlos almost interrupted. âI have an idea! Tell me five things you can see right now.â
âUh . . . itâs dark.â
âOh, well, um.â You could picture the adorable sheepish look on his face. âWell, itâs not completely dark, is it? You can still see a few things? Maybe five things?â
You looked around the room. Your roommateâs bed appeared colorless in the dark, but you could see its outline. âBed.â
Between the two beds, the moon shone through the window. âWindow. Moon. Curtains. Five things?â
âFive things.â You could hear the smile in his voice.
âUm . . .â You looked at your desk. âDesk.â
âGood,â said Carlos. âNow what are four things you can touch right now?â
âUh . . . phone. Bedspread. Pajamas. Um . . .â You switched your phone to your other hand so you could reach out to touch something, anything. The wire of the phone charger brushed against your fingers. âPhone charger.â
âThatâs good.â He yawned. âCan you tell me three things you can hear?â
âYour voice,â you said, smiling. Carlos chuckled on the other end of the line. âYour laugh. And . . . um . . . oh! My voice.â
âGood job. What are two things you can smell?â
âHmm.â You thought about it. You were so used to how your room smelled now, in contrast to the beginning of the school year, that you couldnât smell it anymore. âDoes my room count if I canât actually smell it?â
âI donât think so,â Carlos said gently. âIs there anything in the room that smells different?â
You inhaled deeply, trying to focus on your surroundings. You smelled . . . pencils? âPencils,â you whispered. âI sharpened my pencils not too long before I went to bed.â
âAll right. Anything else?â
You sniffed the room again. âThereâs a faint smell of laundry detergent on my blanket,â you said.
âThatâs your two things,â said Carlos. âOne more: whatâs one thing you can taste?â
âOne thing I can taste,â you echoed. You opened your mouth to taste the air. Nothing. Wait. No. There wasâ
âThereâs still a bit of garlic taste in the back of my mouth,â you said, trying not to giggle. âFrom dinner. I guess I didnât get it all when I brushed my teeth.â
Carlos laughed. âDonât you brush your tongue?â he teased.
âShut up,â you said between laughs.
âSounds like Iâve woken you up more,â Carlos said. âSorry.â
âMaybe, but itâs okay.â You yawned. âOr maybe Iâm not more awake?â
Your boyfriend let out a soft, warm chuckle. âIs your mind quieter now?â
âYeah, but . . . Iâm worried itâll become noisy again. And what if I run out of things I see and hear and touch?â
âIâve found it helpful to list other things,â Carlos said. âI would list, just to myself, all the dog breeds I can name.â
âI could probably only name five,â you admitted.
âIt doesnât have to be dog breeds,â he said. âIt could be anything you know well that gets your mind focused on one thing. Cat breeds, moons of other planets, celebrities with blond hair, InstaRoyal models.â
You laughed and yawned again. âI might try cat breeds, at least at first.â
âThatâs good. I hope you get to sleep soon, babe,â Carlos said in his gentle voice.
âThank you, hon.â
âGood night. I love you.â
âLove you too.â
Your phone beeped, signaling the end of the call. You placed your phone back on your nightstand and returned your unfocused gaze to the ceiling.
Cat breeds, Carlosâs voice echoed in your memory. You imagined cuddling with him on Evieâs couch, his arms encircling you as you listed off cat breeds.
Siamese. Persian. Burmese. Tonkinese. Oriental Shorthair. Oriental Longhair. Himalayan. Him a sittinâ. Him a standinâ. Oh, he a-cominâ. Heheh. Focus. Cat breeds, cat breeds. Uh, Ragdoll? The rexes, the rexes. Cornish Rex. Devon Rex. British Shorthair. Russian Blue. The blue one from France, what was its name? Bordeaux? Or was that a type of candy? Maybe you would have candy tomorrow.
What were you thinking about?
Right. Cat breeds.
The swimming one, the swimming oneâthe Turkish Van. Persian. You already said that. Abyss . . . Abyssinian? Yeah. Sphinx. Wirehair. The ears, the ears ones. Scottish Fold. American Curl. Amer . . . American Shorthair. Norwegian Forest Cat. Maine C . . .
You had fallen asleep.

Hello everyone!
I've decided to try college again after 4 years and I took a math class in the summer and I aced it. I did amazing! I dropped out originally due to me sucking at homework and having trouble dealing with my mental illness. But from that one class, I have a bright outlook on this. And now we're about to start fall quarter and I want to take these two classes. The next math up, precalculus, and beginning chemistry for science majors.
But I've run into a little financial trouble. It seems like I might not be receiving any grants unfortunately and the quarter starts in 2 weeks (9/28).
I was able to receive about $400 through the college from the CARES act and I put that straight onto my fall tuition. And now I have just a little over $800 left I need to pay.
I set up a payment plan! $400 is due on the 20th and $400 is due on October 20th
So, I'm asking for help with funding. (Also my birthday is tomorrow if that helps lol)
If anyone could spare a little, I would greatly appreciate it. Even a dollar would help. Thank you so much and I hope you have a great rest of your day!
